Tougher Penalties For Excessive Whip Use.

The frequency 'guideline' that stewards currently use to determine if a Jockey if too excessive with his whip use is to be removed. It will be replaced by strict and easily understood rules as to how many times the whip can be used in a race.

In two weeks time the new ruling will come into effect. It will mean that in a flat race the whip can be used a maximum of seven times while in a jump race the limit is set to eight times. Any rider deemed to be in excess of this will be dealt harsh penalties.

The new rulings are a result of a ten month review on the current system by the British Horseracing Authority and in general it is well received by the wider racing community.

Nap of the Day - September 25th

Lucky Paddy's Nap of the day today runs at the Curragh where Dermot Weld's Catch The Eye has done exactly that at 10/3. For more tips from the lucky leprechaun vist:

Curragh Preview - September 25th

A seven race card at the Curragh today gets underway at 2.10 with a six furlong maiden race. The going should be good to soft with rain falling on the course for most of the morning. Nephrite is a newcomer from the Aidan O' Brien yard and has been installed as the bookies favourite at 3/1 for the opener.

The 2.40 is a six furlong handicap and is a wide open encounter with no one horse really standing out. Next up is the 3.10, a seven furlong fillies race. I fancy Remember Alexander here at 5/1 for Johnny Murtagh although Coral Wave is the obvious favorite.

Next up is another seven furlong race at 3.45pm. The Dermot Weld trained Catch The Eye has done exactly that and is favorite at 10/3. The 4.20pm one mile group 2 encounter looks like a foregone conclusion with Akeed Mofeed being given odds of 8/11 for the Oxx/Murtagh combination.

The penultimate race of the day is the 4.55pm over a trip of 1mile 2f. Here I will back an outside chance with Legendary Times at 10/1. It's definitely one worth considering and is capable of a good performance here.

The finale is a 1mile 2f maiden race where I've sided with Eva's Time at 4/1 for Dermot Weld.

Preview for Listowel 23/09/11

This meeting gets the go ahead after an early morning inspection. Already rescheduled from last weekend it contains a seven race card with the highlight being the Edmond Whelan Memorial Handicap Hurdle.

Willie Mullins saddles both Inspector Clouseau and Pozyc here. The latter favors better in the weights but both are proving costly to follow lately.

The tip of the meeting is Leah Claire who is fancied to run well in the Martinstown Opportunity Handicap Hurdle having finished second in a promising run last week.

A Tribute to Michael Jarvis

It was with deep regret that we learnt of the passing away of  Michael Jarvis during the week at the age of 73. The Newcastle trainer had suffered from health issues over the last few years and was being treated for cancer.

Michael was the son of a National Hunt jockey and rode three winners himself before turning his hand to training. Jockey Philip Robinson was employed by Jarvis for a hugely successful spell and said of the news,

“It’s really heartbreaking. I was trying to get to see him at the weekend, but I was informed by his wife Gay that he was in a very bad way and not able to talk. It’s very sad,” he told At The Races.

One of Jarvis most successful horse's  was Carroll House who won the Irish Champion Stakes and Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe in 1989. Mick Kinane rode Carroll House to his big victories and credits the horse and trainer with launching him on the world stage.

Kinane said: “He was a thorough gentleman and such a lovely man. It’s so unfortunate that he didn’t get to enjoy his retirement and such is life."

Condolences to the Jarvis family have poured in from the racing community. May he rest in peace.

Nap for 20/09/11

Probably one of the shorter prices of the day but it's hard to look beyond Kahraba 5/4 in the 4.50 at Folkstone. The Dettori/Suroor is expected to strike again despite the high draw number.

The Late Great Ginger McCain

It was with great sadness that we heard the news of the passing away of racing legend Ginger McCain. Just 3 days shy of his 81st birthday Ginger will be best remembered for saddling Red Rum to three Grand Nationals in 73', 74' and 77'. And if that was not enough he returned 27 years later in 2004 and again conquered the Aintree epic with Amberleigh House.

His training career started from humble beginnings starting from when he took out a permit license in 1953. Supplementing his income as a taxi driver amongst other things it wasn't until 16 years had passed that Ginger took out a full training license in 1969.

Donald 'Ginger' McCain 1930-2011

The Grand National was going through turbulent times in the early seventies and many regard the Ginger and Red Rum combination as the saviour of the annual race which was threatened with extinction. Let's not forget that along with the three wins he also had two second place finishes in a five year period. Truly a fairytale scenario and a feat that is unlikely to ever be repeated.

A colourful character to say the least he put the heart in the mouth of many a racing reporter. You just never knew what he was going to say next. He will be dearly missed by all. Rest in Peace.
